Overview

Released at the end of February 2012 by the Raspberry Pi Foundation, the Raspberry Pi is a credit card sized single-board computer originally intended to stimulate the teaching of basic computer programming in schools. However the uses for this inexpensive computer will undoubtedly be constrained only by peoples’ imagination.

Initial Experience

Out of the blue, our Raspberry Pi finally arrived in July. The actual single-board computer costs around £22, but you will need some additional parts to get it up and running. With a suitable power supply, memory card, keyboard, mouse, and cable to connect it to your TV, the total cost is around the £50 mark.

Software Options

Software can also be downloaded from the main company website in various versions to customize your Raspberry Pi. There are options to make the Raspberry Pi a media centre PC for playing movies in full HD, or transforming it into an office desktop.

Benefits for Budget Users

These features can be particularly beneficial for individuals on a budget who want to take advantage of the internet but haven't been able to afford a new computer. The Raspberry Pi can function as a standard desktop computer, allowing users to write letters, browse the Internet, create presentations, and edit photographs, much of which is available free of charge.

Connectivity and Opportunities

With a Raspberry Pi connected to the Internet, everyone can take advantage of the savings that can be made. This device can provide a child with a computer for homework or for other creative uses. Although it has limited capability, planned developments, including the ability to install the Google Android Operating System, could open up a world of opportunities for users.
